Moving In Together: How to Share Closet Space

So if you are following me on social media, or subscribed to my youtube channel, then you would know this already, but if you’re new here, I recently moved. (I posted a vlog discussing that here)

Last summer I made a move to a different state, which at the time was a huge deal. Now 10 months later I am moving again and this time is an even bigger one: I’m moving in with my boyfriend AND…we bought a house! Whaaaaat?

So while you might be thinking “Wow, that’s so exciting!” I’m over here thinking “Wow, we only have one small closet…!”

I kid. No but seriously, it IS really exciting but also challenging for several reasons. First, buying a house is stressful on its own, but once you get into the house, in order to customize it and make it your own, it’s gets really expensive, really quick. Before we even moved in we had to paint the entire house, the kitchen cabinets, rip the carpet out (it was GROSS) and replace the appliances (we believe there was a new strain of penicillin growing in the freezer…) just to make it habitable.

So basically, all the other projects need to be budgeted and planned for later. The first project I wanted to plan and price out was the closet space. I mean look at it…

Tiny for two people right?! Thankfully I have a beauty room to film my videos and hold my shoes but when it comes to the master closet, we have a very small walk in to share. While you can see below, without a professionally installed closet I still have pretty good organizational skills (I am allergic to clutter!) Here are a few tips I personally used when unpacking and fitting us into the space:

  1. Color Coordinate – It really allows you to see what you have and access it easily.
  2. Matching velvet hangers – these hangers literally allow you to fit twice as much in the rod because of how flat they are (to be clear, I have them, he doesn’t yet, but we’re working on it)
  3. Use bins to store and hide – We are now sharing a dresser which means my tee shirts lost a home. I used bins and folded them by category (graphic tees, graphic tanks, solid tees, solid tanks) in order to easily find them.
  4. Use what you’ve got – We happened to have this shelving unit John used in his apartment for his tequila collection (yep, you read that right) and I turned it into a temporary shoe shelf for now.

We’ve literally only been in this house a week but my organization mode is in full effect!

Eventually, however, I want a professionally installed closet. Not only does this maximize the space, reduce clutter and look more aesthetically pleasing, but it will raise the value of the home.

I ended up having a consultation with Ashley from the Las Vegas branch of California Closets to get some options on how to maximize the space. I really think is the best idea when trying to fit two people into a tiny closet – call in the pros to make your life easier.

Ashley came over and gave me some different options on how to get the most of this tiny little room.

The first thing she recommended was to double the hanging space by raising the bar on the right and in the back and putting another one beneath them. This would allow us to get rid of the bar on the left completely and use that wall for shelving, John’s shoes and hampers.

The second thing was to raise everything leaving a shelf on the top to store seasonal items which I am currently keeping under the bed.

While this seems super simple, it actually would completely double the closet space all the way around, while giving us more room to move.

I love this 3D imagery that she was able to create to really help me visualize what it would look like. There are so many options and ways you can do this depending on the budget. You can choose doors, drawers, shelves and literally design it however you want. It’s pretty amazing. They also do other areas in the home too and I’m thinking about doing my laundry room down the road.

I’m excited about the possibilities and I even had her create one for my beauty room closet. Stay tuned to see all my new home decor and design projects on my youtube channel. I will be doing a series chronicling and sharing the process.
