My real skinny jeans…

The July issue of Glamour did an article on two female diseases that doctors miss the most. Why am I bringing this up? Because I have one of them.

I wanted to share this story with you incase anyone out there is, or knows someone who is going through it.

I’ve told you before that I am a personal trainer and also that I was in the Lingerie Bowl a few years back. I showed you here what I looked like. I was fit, I was toned and I had worked really hard to get that way!

Then all of a sudden in one months time I gained 20lbs. This was not only completely devastating, but it was a sign something was very wrong. That was the beginning of a 3 year long battle of being told by doctor after doctor that either nothing was wrong with me or that they just didn’t know. I had symptoms that mirrored hypothyroidism, chronic fatigue and diabetes. So what the heck was it??

I had blood work done every other month and I did extensive research on what my symptoms were so I was educated when I went to see these doctors. I had been working out several hours a day and eating right and my weight WASN’T BUDGING. But when I insisted there was SOMETHING wrong, I was asked if I had an eating disorder, body dysmorphic disorder and even placed on antidepressants!!

Then one day an endocrinologist noticed I had some high testosterone levels in my blood work. This she told me, is an indication of PCOS or Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. After doing some research I found out that this disease can mirror all the conditions it seemed like i was having. There is no clear way to diagnose it, but high levels of testosterone can occur.

I had an ultrasound and even then was told I probably didn’t have it. Frustrated I went to yet another doctor. This doctor was concerned about my very low insulin levels and decided to try me on a diabetic medication called Metformin. This medication as it turns out, is also used to treat PCOS.

At this point I had nothing to lose so I began the medication and I was ecstatic that it started to work!! I lost 5 lbs immediately and I knew that we had figured it out. It took another year before I received a formal diagnosis when I went to a GYN and she reviewed my ultrasound. “oh yes,” she said “it’s clear as day, you have PCOS.”Of course by then I had lost a lot of the weight.

A year and a half later I am back in my skinny jeans. These jeans I haven’t fit into in nearly 4 years. After a lot of hard physical and emotional work I FINALLY have my life back! The lesson in this is if you know there is something wrong with you, keep fighting until you figure it out. Even if doctors tell you you’re crazy, you know your body, if you think something is wrong, it probably is!!
