San Francisco Travel Guide – Quick Trip

One of the cool things about living in Los Angeles, is I am within driving distance from a lot of really cool places. One of my favorites, is San Francisco. It is a 6 hour drive, but if road trips really aren’t your thing, it is only an hour flight to one of the coolest cities packed full of so much to see and do.

I try to go up there every chance I get, but each trip is usually pretty quick. Because it’s such a big city, figuring out what to do in a small amount of time can be overwhelming. So I decided to put together a travel guide for some quick trip ideas, so if you guys have a chance to go, even for a short visit, you have a resource of some great spots.

Where to Stay:

Chancellor Hotel: I love staying in the heart of Union Square and this hotel is in such an amazing location. Close to shopping, bars, restaurants, theaters, public transportation and the cable car stops right out front. The rooms are compact, some with amazing Union Square views, they have wifi as well as flat-screen TVs, minifridges and ceiling fans.

The W Hotel:  If a more modern vibe is your thing then you will love this hotel. Located in the SoMa district, the rooms look like trendy apartment suites with artful decor, the latest in technology and multi device charging station. Even the gym has a futuristic vibe.

Where to eat:

San Francisco is a city made for foodies. The restaurants are on another level so I did an entire post breaking down some of my favorites. Check that out here.

What to see and do:

San Francisco is a beauty, and is also rich with history and landmarks. If it is your first time and/or you are on a budget, there are lots of low cost things to do.

Golden Gate Bridge: This is kind of a staple and it it as impressive as it looks in photos.

Painted Ladies: This row of pastel Victorian houses are located across from Alamo Square park and were made famous from the opening credits of Full House. Grab a picnic lunch, hang out in the park and take in the view.

Rent a Bike at Bay City Bike and ride to the Golden Gate Park. Biking is so fun, great exercise and Golden Gate park is an amazing escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. There’s a Botanical Garden, Japanese Tea Garden, museums, carousel, aquarium and the grounds are just beautiful.

Visit Fishermans Wharf: This is a bit touristy, but you can ride the cable cars all the way there, walk around Ghirardelli Square and check out some historical Navy ships.

How to get around:

The public transportation system in the city makes it so easy to get around without a car. The Muni is an extensive network of buses, streetcars, trolley buses and cable cars. I recommend getting a 1, 3 or 7 day passport which will get you unlimited rides and I think everyone should ride the cable cars at least once. These amazing pieces of history have been operating since 1912!

Other tips:

Dress in layers – the weather in San Francisco is moody and can change in an instant. If you are using public transportation and are going to be out and about I really recommend planning for any weather situation.

Where comfortable shoes – SF is one of the hilliest places I’ve every been and walking is definitely a challenge. The shoes you choose can make or break your day.

Road Trip – If you have time for a road trip up the coast, I highly recommend it. You can check out my article on how you can do it on a budget here!

I hope these tips help and let me know if you visit and what your favorite things about the city are!
